Books for Active Soldiers & Veterans
To support our troops serving overseas, a "Books for Active Soldiers and Veterans" program was begun in 2005.
The committee gathers and boxes books that are then sent to soldiers who have requested them. We have received many notes from the soldiers expressing their appreciation for our efforts. In 2007, we received a Certificate of Appreciation from the 210th Brigade Support Battalion, Camp Striker, Iraq. In 2009, we received a Coin of Excellence from the Chaplains in Bagram, Afghanistan in appreciation of our Books for Soldiers program.
Since 2005, the Friends have sent over 3,000 books to our soldiers. We are happy to have found this small way to support our troops serving so far from home.
If you know of a soldier who would like to receive books, you can contact us with his/her information by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. For military security purposes we must have a specific name and address to send books.
We also support our veterans by donating books that are distributed by the American Legion's Books for Vets program.
Books for Kane County Jail inmates
We provide paperback books that are distributed to jail inmates and for the family waiting area.
