Information and Useful Facts about School Services for Grades K - 8

Book Stack

As part of our mission to support the educational efforts of our community, the St. Charles Public Library provides special services to educators at elementary and middle schools. All teachers at schools located in the St. Charles Public Library District (see list below) are entitled to the services listed. St. Charles Public Library cardholders who teach at schools outside the Library District are encouraged to contact the public library serving their school.

  • Ask Youth Services!–  Chat online with a St. Charles Public Library reference librarian. 
  • Library catalog.
  • You’ve Got to Read This! –  A database of book reviews written by St. Charles Public Library readers and staff. Discover great books or set up an account and have your students add reviews.
  • A Book List Just for You! –  Librarians create personalized reading lists for students based on answers to a few questions.
  • Recommended Reading–  Lists of titles on various genres and subjects created by ASK ME Desk staff.
  • Beginning Reader Books by Reading Level –  Find lists of book titles with Gunning Fog Index reading levels 1.0 – 3.9 or Fountas & Pinnell Levels A –  L in our JR Reader collection.
  • Online tutor assistance for your students in controlled chat sessions is available from Live Homework Help from and HelpNow from Brainfuse.Screened tutors are available 7 days a week in English or Spanish to help students get their homework done. Both also have flashcards, videos, practice tests and more available 24/7. Please note:Any student may access these at the Library. Outside the Library, a St. Charles Public Library card number and PIN are needed for access.
  • Online encyclopedias and databases–  The Library subscribes to a number of online encyclopedias and databases that contain articles, photographs, maps and other kinds of information which has been thoroughly and carefully chosen, reviewed, fact-checked and is updated on a regular basis. All students have access to these databases and more at the Library. Outside the Library, a St. Charles Public Library card number and PIN are needed for access.

Teacher Library Accounts

Teachers who work at schools located in the Library District may sign a form at their school indicating they would like a library account. The principal of the school submits a list of faculty authorized to check out materials for the educational needs of the school and agrees to be responsible to the St. Charles Public Library for all materials borrowed on their behalf. The account can be used by presenting a photo I.D. at the Circulation Desk on the main level or the ASK ME Desk in Youth Services.

Standard Loan Periods
Books:  3 weeks
Audio Books, CDs, Kits & Playaways:  3 weeks
Magazines:  1 week
DVDs:  1 week

Please note:
Materials may be renewed by contacting our Circulation Department at (630) 584-0076, then touch “0.” Fines of $0.10 per item per day are charged for overdue materials.

Teacher Loan Service

The Youth Services staff is happy to assist you in selecting materials for your classroom. Once you have an account, simply contact us with the topics of your choice at least 5 business days before you would like your materials. We will select materials, check them out on your teacher account and place them in a convenient bag. Items are available for up to a 5-week loan period.

Assignment Alerts

Help your students have a more successful research experience by letting us know about major assignments in advance. Fax assignments to 630-584-9262 Attention: Youth Services or email assignments.  

Library Visits / Librarian Visits

Your students can learn what their Library has to offer with a trip to the Library or a visit from a librarian. Programs can be customized to include the following:

  • a Library tour (in person or virtual)
  • an introduction to Online Reference and Research Resources
  • stories
  • book talks
  • information about reading programs and library services.

Library staff is also available for presentations at staff or PTO meetings and to display information and answer questions at book fairs, literacy nights, curriculum nights and open houses.

Use of Computers in Youth Services by Students in grades K-8

  • Computers in the Youth Services Information Commons are for the use of preschool children, students in elementary and middle school and their parents/caregivers.
  • Students in grades K-2 may use computers when an adult or caregiver remains at the computer.
  • Youth Services Information Commons computers have Internet access and Microsoft Office products: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Publisher.
  • A student will be able to access the Internet in its entirety, including the ability to enter URLs of the websites they wish to use.
    • Parents are responsible for their child/student’s Internet use.
    • Two Express stations are available to all students and parents/caregivers.
    • A St. Charles Public Library Card is required for sign-in on the regular stations.
  • Online Resources for Students – The Library subscribes to a number of online encyclopedias and databases that contain articles, photographs, maps and other kinds of information which has been thoroughly and carefully chosen, reviewed, fact-checked and is updated on a regular basis.
  • iPads with educational apps are also available to any student in our Information Commons without sign-in.


Use of Library Computers by Teachers

  • Anyone can sign-in and use the computers in the Info Commons on the main level of the Library with a photo ID for 30 minutes. All of the Library’s Online Resources can be found following this path on the Library’s website:  Research & Learning then Articles & Databases. Several of these online encyclopedias and databases also include helpful educator tools.


  • Hoonuit – This video-based training resource contains videos covering more than 500 of today’s most popular software applications for both PCs and Macs, including social media.
  • Children's Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD) – An online database with over 400,000 reviews and links to parent and teacher resources.
  • ScienceFlix – This engaging, curriculum-driven, interactive digital resource has an emphasis in the latest STEM thinking and Next Generation Science Standards and presents articles written at 3 different reading levels for students in grades 4 through 9. It includes videos, project and experiment ideas, information on careers in science and lesson plans.

  • A personal St. Charles Library card is required to use Library computers in the Technology Center.
