Sunday Concert Series
Sundays 2:00 p.m.
Carnegie Community Room
The Sunday Concert Series began in 1979. The library has hosted hundreds of musicians, singers, and professional performers from a wide variety of musical styles.
April 27 – Elgin Symphony Orchestra Ensemble *
The ESO String Quartet presents a program blending classical elegance with a touch of the celestial. The afternoon will feature Mozart and Holst’s St. Paul Suite. Experience an engaging mix of familiar favorites with a touch of cosmic inspiration at the Saint Charles Public Library.
June 8 – Tempero Brasileiro *
The duo Tempero Brasileiro consists of flutist Julie Koidin and guitarist Neal Alger. Each has been a staple of the Chicago area music scene for decades and in 2017 they combined forces out of their mutual love of Brazilian choro music. Choro was Brazil’s first “urban” music made famous in the United States by 1940s film star, Carmen Miranda. In 2020, Julie moved to Austin, Texas, but continues to perform with Neal at various venues in Illinois. In this concert, the duo will perform a selection of their favorites in the Brazilian and South American repertoire including some originals.
June 22 – New Works for Marimba Based on Literature *
Dr. Josh Graham, a percussionist praised as “beguiling” by the Chicago Tribune, will perform several recently commissioned works for solo marimba. The pieces, for him by composers including Katherine Pukinskis, Griffin Candey, and Michael Conrad, draw their inspiration from works of literature, including Ernest Hemingway’s “The Nick Adams Stories,” the poetry of Iowan James Hearst, and Psalm 139. The performance will include readings of the works that have inspired them.
*The Sunday Concert Series is sponsored in part by the St. Charles Public Library Foundation.
